it started with the archduke of austria-hungary being shot to death by a serbian man from a Serbian political group that was called the black hand. austria-hungary blamed it on the serbian government and declared war on serbia. Russia was an ally with serbia so it mobilized waiting for war. germany was an ally to austria-hungary so it showed its trust by attacking russia. france was an ally with russia so it attacked germany. germany tried to attack france but it had to move through Belgium to do so. Great Britain was friends with Bulgaria. so britain attacked germany. America entered the war when germany sank a british submarine that had a fair amount of american citizens. (germany, austria-hungary and the ottoman empire were called the central powers. the USA, france, italy, Great Britain and russia were called the allies... the treaty that ended the war was the treaty of Versailles

Because Austria Hungary Didnt like the fact that franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a serbian group the black hand
A man named Gabriel Princip, from Serbia, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. This got the Austrians in an uproar and they demanded to know who killed him and then war broke out with almost the whole world joining in.

extras-

1. the first world war was the largest military conflict in history (of earth you never know what Doctor Who has been doing)

2. more than 130 million people from the military etc were involved 60 million of those were from Europe.

3. more than 15 million people had died in world war one including civillians.

the question that you asked,

The assassination on 28 June 1914 of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, is seen as the immediate trigger of the war, though long-term causes, such as imperialistic foreign policy, played a major role. Ferdinand's assassination at the hands of Yugoslav nationalist Gavrilo Princip resulted in Habsburg ultimatum against the Kingdom of Serbia. Several alliances that had been formed over the past decades were invoked, so within weeks the major powers were at war; with all having colonies the conflict soon spread around the world.

hope this helped
