After the hot war with Nazi Germany was over in 1945, a Cold War began because The Soviet Union, which had suffered terribly at Germany's hands, refused to leave the Eastern part of Germany, which contained Berlin, the previous capital of Germany and it's economic heart. The United States, and Britain, principally, began an airlift to keep Berlin alive politically and economically, though in the heart of a Communist state. It worked so well that West Berlin continued strong. Russia didn't like it, but couldn't take military action because they hadn't yet stolen the nuclear secrets of the US and Britain and thereby provided themselves with a nuclear bomb. Later, a new Cold War German capital was established at Bonn, but it was never the social or cultural equal of Berlin. In 1989, when the Berlin Wall came down in a popular action mainly of students and other young Germans, the Soviet Union collapsed because it's people wanted to live in the West, with its freedoms and economic opportunities. Communism was dead in Russia, but was eventually succeeded by the tyrant Putin, who is in many ways, worse.

Did the Berlin blockade force the western powers to leave the city
The wall blockade and airlift were part of the Berlin Crisis, specifically the Berlin Blockade, which occurred from 1948 to 1949. This situation arose when the Soviet Union blocked access to West Berlin in an attempt to gain control over the entire city. In response, the Western Allies initiated the Berlin Airlift, supplying West Berlin with food and essentials by air. The crisis highlighted the intense geopolitical tensions of the Cold War between the Eastern and Western blocs.
The Berlin Airlift.
Allied Powers only did it to surprise the western part of Europe, and the Axis Powers.
The Russian's wanted the western sectors so they decided to starve them out by not letting anything in. The Western nations decided to fly in supplies for nearly a year before the Russians gave in. My uncle flew the airlift.
Britain, France, and the US decided to combine the German zones they controlled.
The Berlin blockade and resulting airlift effectively ended the unity of the Allied Powers. The Soviet Union was now opposed to the involvement of its western partners in East Germany. The threat of war lingered and began what would become known as the Cold War.
The word 'airlift' is both a noun (airlift, airlifts) and a verb (airlift, airlifts, airlifting, airlifted). Examples:Noun: In 1948, when Russia completely sealed off the western half of Berlin, the US and its allies brought in food and fuel by means of an airlift.Verb: One of the accident victims was so badly injured they had to airlift him to a hospital with a trauma unit.
It began soon after WWII. Berlin was part of western Europe but it was entirely inside Russian territory and Russia blocked western vehicles to cross their territory in order to supply goods to Berlin. The western powers began an airlift to fly across Russian territory to Berlin
the western powers decided to form a group called NATO (North Atlantic treaty organisation). They would help each other if the soviets attack one of them.
The Western powers didnt do anything.

The significance of the Berlin Airlift was that it showed the Soviet Union that the western Allies would not abandon the citizens of West Berlin and were prepared to go to extraordinary lengths to maintain their independence. With the Berlin Blockade in place, the Soviets had expected the Western allies to abandon the city but underestimated the Britain and America's determination to supply their troops and the civilian population of Berlin. After the airlift began the Soviets claimed it would never work and the subsequent success of the Airlift was a great humiliation for them. For more information, check out the related question below.
