Was the 'Gulf of Tonkin' incident real?

The first attack was an actual naval battle between the destroyer USS Maddox and 3 North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boats (02 August '64). The second attack involved two destroyers on 04 August '64; the USS Maddox and the USS Turner Joy. This 2nd sea engagement is questionable.

What happened to the USS Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin?

In fact, the Maddox had been on a spying mission and had fired first.

Why did the gulf of tonkin incident happen?

Because North Vietnamese Navy (NVN) torpedo boats attacked the USN destroyer USS Maddox on 02 August 1964. Then, allegedly again on the 4th. The resolution occurred shortly afterwards. The first attack did happen, it was in fact a sea battle between the NVN & USN. The second attack may have been a mis-understanding coupled with a radar malfunction with one or more of the destroyers.

What caused the US to enter into s full scale war in Vietnam?

North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boats from their 135th TB squadron attacked the USN destroyer USS Maddox in the Tonkin Gulf on 02 August 1964; this was followed by an another alledged attack on the USS Turner Joy (and Maddox again) on 04 August 1964. Within the week the United States was bombing North Vietnam...it was on!

How did Congress react to the North Vietnamese attack in the Gulf of Tonkin?

LBJ wanted to keep a low profile on the first attack on 02 August '64 (sweep it under the carpet-it didn't happen). Which just so happen to be a real torpedo attack on the USS Maddox. The second attack on the USS Turner Joy & USS Maddox on 04 August '64 may have been a radar gliche (error). But it was reported as a second attack, all the way to the White House. So LBJ received the go ahead from congress to use military force.

When did the Vietnam troop build up and start at and why?

Conventional forces built up in about March 1965. The result of a NVN (P4) Motor Torpedo Boat attack on the (destroyer) USS Maddox on 02 August 1964, and an alleged attack on 04 August 1964 against the destroyers USS Maddox & Turner Joy in the Gulf of Tonkin. The first attack was an actual sea battle, the Maddox did engage the torpedo boats with her 5 inch guns, and the boats did launch torpedoes at the Maddox. The second attack is alleged; although the Turner Joy DID fire hundreds of 5 inch shells at her radar directed targets.

The two communist attacks on a US ship in the Gulf of Tonkin in August 1964 were unprovoked?

The destroyer USS Maddox was on a DeSoto patrol (Intelligence gathering missions) and Nasty boats were moving about, the North Vietnamese Navy was reacting to those activities. So it's a case of "he said she said." As for the two communist attacks; the 02 August attack was real, North Viet Navy torpedo boats actually did fire torpedos and automatic cannons at the Maddox...and Maddox did fire hundreds of 5 inch shells at the boats. So it was a naval battle alright. The second attack on 04 August may have been "Tonkin Ghosts" (radar ghosts). Both the USN and NVN pretty well agree on that post war.
