I wondered this myself, so I did some research. Gold was originally discovered in Asia a very long time ago in it's purest form, .999% pure or 24KT. Gold made it's way via trade westward across the globe. In order to transport (transportation fees etc) the gold would be stepped and the actual purity would be lessened the farther West it came. IN India, the common gold is 22KT gold. The popular gold in Europe is 18kt as it is only 75% pure. By the time you get to the U.S., it is only 58.5% pure, which is 14KT and then gold made it's journey southward to this is why the most common gold in central and South America is 10KT. When figuring the value of gold, you have to again figure the purity, because the dollar value you see traded on Wall Street is for pure (24KT) gold. So if you have an item that is only 58.5% pure gold, then yo have to take that Wall Street Price and multiple it by .585 to compare values appropriately. I got most of this information from three sites. I will try to add their links
somewhere I read that it means gold plated (with 14k gold)
14K means 14/24, of 7/12, which is 58% gold. Unplated means that a) the jewelry is not simply plated with the 14K gold, but it is 14K gold through and through, and b) the 14K gold is not plated with anything else.
14K Gold Electro-plated
The gp means gold plated.
gold-plated
it is a 14 carat gold ring
14k F means gold fill not gold plated gold fill is better than plated but not solid gold just a thin layer of gold applied to some other metal
all quality jewls will have a number on them. go to a jewler to find out what the number represents. he/she will tell you weather it is plated or real. if it doesnt have a number (they are really small) it is probley made of plastic or something else cheap
14kt gp just means its gold plated its not as valuable like real gold its basicly dipped in gold and 14 perecent of the metal is alloy
cut it to see
It Is solid 14K gold! AK is the mark for Atasay Kuyumculuk, a leading jeweler from Turkey. You can put plated on packaging but there is no such thing as a stamp on jewelry for plated. Legally 14K, 18K, etc is the purity level of solid gold. Don't rely on random people, including myself, for such important information! If you even have this anymore because of what they told you. Go to a jeweler site or a Maker's Mark site or some other specific site with experts!
14K GP means fourteen karat -- gold plated.
