Belt is stretched or the tension pulley
1) The drive belt could be broken. 2) The rearend could be bad 3) The brake on the rearend could be stuck. (this would make the rear tires lock up) 4) The pulley on the engine or rearend could be the problem. You need to do a little investigating to see what is going on where.
Use a puller so you do not bend the pulley.
I need to know how to remove a bolt from a pulley assembly on a Briggs and Stratton 8 hp vertical lawn mower engine. It seems to be rusty. I tied DW40 and vise grips and shaft slips. Any suggestions?
Not quite sure of the question, but I will give you a site I did (no ads, no nothing) and see if it helps:
To remove the rear drive pulley from a Huskee riding lawn mower while it's still on the mower, first ensure the mower is turned off and the battery is disconnected for safety. Remove the belt from the pulley by loosening the tensioner if necessary. Then, use a socket wrench to remove the bolts securing the pulley to the shaft. If the pulley is stuck, gently tap it with a rubber mallet to help loosen it.
Remove the belt(s) and manipulate the pulley by hand; its action should be butter-smooth.
To install the main drive belt on a Murray riding mower, first ensure the mower is turned off and the key is removed for safety. Remove the mower deck by disconnecting the belt and any necessary bolts. Next, route the new drive belt around the engine pulley and axle pulley, following the mower's belt routing diagram, which is usually found on the mower's frame. Finally, reattach the deck and check the tension on the belt before starting the mower.
Most lawnmowers loosen to the left. At least that's how I do it.
remove the varable speed pulley-replace both belts re-install varable speed pulley--your done.
A Murray riding lawnmower owners manual can be obtained from most Murray riding lawnmower dealerships. You can find the owners manual at most local libraries.
