I myself recommend using Pokemon with decent attack or decent sp.atk, such as garchomp, gengar, alakazam, and if you want a powerful sweeper, choose chimchar as a starter. I would also avoid using more than one of the same type in your team, then you can has more variations and you will be strong against more types. My favourite and most used Platinum team is as follows:
