Here is what happens - there are spoilers (obviously) so beware. Mia and her friends are all applying for colleges, since they are graduating soon. All of her friends get into the second choices, while Mia gets accepted to all the colleges she applies for. Mia thinks it's because she's a princess, so she tells her friends that she didn't get in anywhere. A recurring theme is that she lies all the time, and at some point in the book she decides to start telling the truth. Meanwhile, she is trying to shop her senior project around to publishers - the reason she hasn't written in her diary in two years is because she's been writing a romance novel as her senior project. She tells all her friends that she's writing a paper on Genovian olive pressing in the 12th or 13th century (can't remember which). This is another one of her lies. She also wrote a lot of sex scenes into it, which is probably one reason she doesn't want to be honest about it (there's the whole 'will they like it' thing as well). Then she finds out Michael has returned to NYC to donate one of his CardioArms to Columbia University. This is basically why there's even a tenth book, and why Meg came up with the convenient excuse for her having written a novel instead of obsessing over her boyfriend for two years (she dated JP for those two years). Mia manages to secretly go to the presentation at Columbia, and bumps into Lilly, who decides to 'punish' her by making her go say hello to Michael, which she does. It is also arranged for Mia to interview Michael for the school paper. Mia is also turning 18, so her grandmother is occupying her time preparing for the big soiree while Mia's father runs for office back in Genovia (due to the events in book 9, he has to be prime minister if he wants any of his measures to get passed, so that's the reason why). Without going into too much detail, here are the major spoilers in the book: * Mia's book finally gets published by Avon, who asks her for her real name - this was actually leaked by Amazon sometime last year, and Meg had to go public with it when that happened. * Tina and Boris actually had sex over the summer - Tina confesses this after reading Mia's romance novel. * JP had sex with Lilly while they were going out, and had been lying to Mia the whole time. * The reason why Lilly was so mad was because Mia went out with JP, the ex. Mia didn't know that Lilly and JP had had sex - this was because both Lilly and JP lied to her in book 7 or 8 (can't remember at the moment). * It turns out that Mia was never really sexually attracted to JP - she calls this 'the other thing' * Mia finds out the truth about JP in the bathroom at the prom, when Lilly tells her why she was so angry. Mia then goes to JP and decides to break up with him, rather than having sex with him (she decided to do this so she wouldn't be the last virgin in her senior class). * Turns out all her friends lost their virginity, including Shameeka, Lana and Trisha (Mia also mentions Perin and Ling Su, and it's implied that they're in a relationship with each other). * Mia decides to go to Sarah Lawrence. * Mia's dad wins the elections in Genovia * After JP and Mia break up, Michael takes her to his house and they finally have sex. * Kenny is the class valedictorian, and the book ends shortly after his address.
