Only three provinces joined together, but once they did so there were four provinces. Confused??

The three provinces that joined in Confederation were Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the pre-Confederation Province of Canada. Upon Confederation, the Province of Canada was severed into the provinces of Québec and Ontario.

Which Canadian province was the first to join Canadian Confederation?

Manitoba was known as the postage stamp province when it first joined Confederation in 1870, becoming the 5th province to join Canada, or the first since the first four provinces (Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick) in 1867. It was known as the postage stamp province because it was quite small then, only covering roughly 1/18 of it's current size. It was also rather square in shape, and because of it's small, square shape, it was nicknamed the postage stamp province.

When did Canada East join Confederation?

Canada East was not a political entity. It was part of the pre-Confederation Province of Canada. The Province of Canada was one of the three colonies that joined to create Canada, the first country to be created by legislation. The other two colonies were Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Confederation occurred on July 1, 1867. Immediately upon Confederation, the Province of Canada was severed into the Provinces of Ontario and Québec.

When did Quebec join Canada?

Saskatchewan and Alberta both became provinces on September 1, 1905. They were created by the Government of Canada out of the Northwest Territories. It would be correct to say they "entered" Confederation, but they did not "join" Canada because they did not exist prior to that date. The word "join" implies a prior existence.

Seventh province to join confederation of Canada?

Prince Edward Island (PEI) became the seventh province, but only three provinces have actually 'joined' Confederation. The British Parliament created Canada by the British North America (BNA) Act. The BNA Act created two provinces out of the pre-Confederation Province of Canada (Ontario and Quebec) and united them with New Brunswick and Nova Scotia as the four original provinces. None of the original four actually 'joined,' so none can claim to be 'first.' The BNA Act provided for the Parliament of Canada to admit British colonies as provinces in Confederation, and to create provinces out of the North West Territories. The colonies admitted as provinces were British Columbia (1871), PEI (1873) and Newfoundland (1949). The Parliament of Canada created Manitoba (1870), as well as Saskatchewan and Alberta (both 1905).
