The US Civil War deeply affected the psyche of the Mississippians. However the Reconstruction Era may have had a deeper effect then the war itself. Carpetbaggers were despised and many of did perform poorly. Military Government when it had Black troops under its command regularly faced hostility from the locals even though the conduct of the individual trooper may have been exemplary. A second statewide War may have been Civil Rights crisis of the 1960's which resulted in the events that lead to the Movie Mississippi Burning. It must be noted that in every conflict that the US has faced since its birth until the US Civil War and again after that regretable crisis moment in American History loyal Mississippians have served the Nation with due dilligence, bravery and Honor even today in the Middle East and around the world.
