India started out in the religion of Hinduism. Buddha saw human suffering and tried to find a realm with no suffering and death. He sought the answers from Hindu priests and searched for years. He then became the enlightened one and developed a new religion of Buddhism. The culture of ancient India didn't change as much as The Chinese culture did, but they did include Buddha as one of their many gods seeing him as a virtuous person.

Actually Buddhism had and still has a significant effect on India. At one time Buddhism was the largest religion in India. This lasted for quite some time until Hindu priests used their political power to dampen the spread of Buddhism and cause it to decline. Regardless of ancient history, the Buddha's teachings were brought into Hinduism and the Buddha is still revered by Hindus as the ninth avatar of Vishnu.
Buddhism's effects are many and varied, depending on the form of Buddhism, how it is adopted, and the culture into which it is adopted. Like any other religious tradition it is often misunderstood, and when it is misinterpreted it can cause problems (for example, people thinking of "karma" as punishment and therefore being unwilling to help someone born with disabilities, which is a shocking misrepresentation of what the Buddha taught). From my own small observation of a country known for Buddhism -- Tibet -- it would seem that the teachings, when well embedded into the culture, can be a source of resiliance and tolerance under extreme pressure and persecution.
Buddhism. Simple as that. But the term Buddhism and Buddhists was coined by early English visitors to India. Originally followers of the Buddha referred to themselves as Saugata, Sakyans or Sakyabhiksu in ancient India.
