Australians looked upon it as their duty being a part of the British Empire they wouldn't even think of not getting involved. Australian men that went there all volunteered and saw it as an opportunity to go and see home as Britain was referred to in those days. However even after it became obvious that the war was no walk in the park Australia remained committed to their British heritage.

Canada is a Confederation of many Nations each with many peoples and each with their own history and view on the topic.

For many it was a sense of pride that such a small new country could have such an impact on the largest war ever seen, with the worlds most professional armies slaughtering people by the millions.

For others it was seen as a waste. It cost us many lives and much money and for what? To help fight in what was basically abound by treaties that clearly had little benefit for them.

Others yet were embarrassed that Canada didn't have it's own military, that they couldn't fight as Canadians. Instead they fought as British forces, reporting to British military commanders, and dying at the orders of British politicians.

Still others thought we were fighting for the wrong side.

Canada, many nations, many peoples, many histories.
