After defeating the Delhi Sultan Ibrahim Lodi, he stayed in India and laid foundations of a new empire in 1526. Babur's son Humayun, the second Mughal Emperor, was defeated by the Afghan King Sher Shah Suri and he had to leave India. However, after defeating Sher Shah's successor, he returned to India and re-established the Mughal Empire. After the death of Humayun, the Hindu King Hemu occupied the throne of India for a short time. Hemu was defeated in the 2nd battle of Panipat in 1556 by the Mughal army of Akbar. The Mughal Empire was re-established under Akbar the Great, which lasted until 1857.
