Nationalism started to arise in the 19th century. There were many differences in what was deemed to be considered a nation. New areas tried to form a "Nation" and borders were drawn. In 1858 the British Crown had a direct rule over India. (pg 848) The rule resulted in many small state, small territories and with this came different cultures groups. Nomads and other travelers settled in this area which did not set well with the British. The British were afraid of military up-rivals. "The cultural relationship between Britain and India was not a one-way affair". (pg 850) After World War I, Gandhi and his followers directed an all India drive that forced the British out giving them freedom in 1947 (pg 853)The advancement of education and the growth of the native elite, African nationalism spread across Africa. The common tongue, tribal visions and boundaries cultivated a new identity for Africans. However, Western political ideas became dominate in Africa and promoted leader to learn from the Western opportunities; the end result producing forty self-governing African nations after 1945. Wars with suffering and bloodshed finally led the freedom of India and Pakistan from the Western control. Gandhi played a part in the religious division of the Middle East. He drew on his own faith of Hinduism but also incorporate the beliefs of Western liberals and Christian follower. Branches of religion found their way to created division of the Middle East. However the great demand for dominance and power led to an unsuccessful attempt to create a nation. Muslims fear the loss of a communal identity thus causing decentralized status. The shift that was made in the trading routes almost completely eliminated the Middle East. It was not until the crude materials such as oil that brought the focus back to the Middle East. Now with a military army, they were trained to protect their resources, culture and religious beliefs. and lived happy ever after
