St. Louis ARCH symbolizationThe St. Louis arch symbolizes the gateway to the west. In the late 1800's and early 1900's, St. Louis was considered the west. Builders constructed the arch to symbolize St. Louis as the city of the west. back then, it was known as St. Louis being the west; the territory beyond was being explored by Louis and Clark at the time the arch was built.
