Columbus' initial destination was India. He apparently thought he had landed there when he reached the Americas. It is un known what he expected to find, apparently not being famaliar India's populace and it seems he called the indiginous peoples of the Americas Indians.

The first humans got to America by foot; following animal tracks in around 1492. They got there by crossing the Land bridge. They could pass this bridge because in the ice age all the water had frozen and that meant the sea had shrunk and had become shallower. As the ice age came to an end the sea levels rose and Asia was cut off from America for ever!

Hope this helps!
