If you are having starting problems replace the starter solenoid switch attached to the short positive battery cable. Well, it could be the starter solenoid, but if you can wiggle the gear shift while turning the key and get it to start, it is definitely the neutral safety switch...oldest electrical gremlin in the book. Climb underneath and look for the linkage between the shifter and the transaxle. Have somebody move the shift (battery negative disconnected of course) to help you identify it. The switch in most front wheel drive vehicles is mounted on the transaxle and is identifiable by at least one electrical wire and the shift linkage as well as being obviously adjustable by loosening a bolt and rotating the switch. Be careful that you don't adjust it so that it will start in any gear except neutral or park. Adjust..test..adjust..test..etc. Jolly good fun.

∙ 12y agoI'm not quite sure as to when this was posted but I'll go ahead and help out just incase... The brake light switch is located just above the brake pedal. Its a little push button that rest on the top of the brake pedal. Can't miss it, might be kind of hard to get in position to work with your hands and see whats going on down there but its possible. Its all held on by plastic clips, I'm not sure how the grand Cherokee is set up take a look at it to make sure. But if you bought a new one you'll be able to gently break it off... or just push the plastic clips in if you can see and reach them. The button on the switch is pressed in when the brake pedal is stationary, but when you push on the brakes the button is released therefore switching on your brake lights.. hope this helps

∙ 12y agoMost brake light switches ratchet into position and self-adjust. To reset the adjustment, press the brake pedal part way down & pull the switch out toward the pedal until it clicks several times.

More than likely the brake light switch is defective or out of adjustment.
Look at the uper end of the brake pedal under the dash area
Check the brake light switch first. It is usually near the brake pedal under the dash. A bad turn signal switch can also cause this if the brake lights are also turn signal lights. If the brake lights are independent of the turn signals then disregard the switch problem. A good wiring diagram will help to diagnose the problem also. Check with dealership mechanics as they have access to diagrams.
