The wood panel lifts up just enough to pop the bottoms of each switch off with a flat blade screwdriver. You need to pry off all 4 window switches, the window safety lock, the hazard, the radio speaker knob, etc. BUT before doing this you have to carefully pop off the black plastic trim ring around the gear shifter 1st and then use a flat paint scraper or butter knife at the base of the wood closest to the armrest area and pry gently away and up. Don't use a flat blade driver because you don't want to chip the wood panel. Once you get all of the wire plugs separated from each of the button switches you can turn it upside down and GENTLY pop the switch out. I say "gently" because this is the most common area of breakage and once you break a clip that secures the switch from the underside of the wood panel you are screwed. The only way the switch will stay in place now is by using a glob of good ole JB Weld, which works great but now that switch will be there permanently.
I'm having the same problem with my 2000 Chevy Malibu. I took the switch apart, noticing that the plastic piece that rocks back & forth on the middle of the base, that seperates the contacts has melted. I used the end of a q-tip minus the cotton to push the contacts down for the up position. The window went up. I'm going to replace the swith.
It depends on which switch you are talking about. If you are talking about the door ajar awitch you need to remove the interior door panl along with the shower curtain. After that it will be best to remove the door lock, latch to get to the door ajar switch. This switch usually comes off with a push in and a turn in the counter clock direction.Once this is done just put all back the way you took it off.I assume that this is what you are talking about, however there are other switches,Window, lock, mirror, window lock and sometimes more.

The window switch can be pried out of the console, but do it carefully. But if the windows are not working, there is a dashboard switch, on some models it is in a line of switches above the radio. That is the window lock-out switch so the children, if there are any, can not play with the windows or adjust them inappropriately. Push that first to see if the lock-out switch is set in. Another thing to try before changing a switch is the fuse. There are on-line sources for the wiring diagram for your model.
