There was a civil war between the Native Cambodians and the Khmer Rouge Regime. The Khmer Rouge Regime began in 1975 and ended in 1979. It has been said the Vietnamese army help chase the Khmer Rouge out of Cambodia, however, they wanted to take over Cambodia's land. Also, the U.N also came and help the Native Cambodians out. As far as I have found, it is a classless society where the people work in fields and rely on farming for the country's sole source of income. It is very communistic and atheistic in nature. An example is the Khmer Rouge's reign in Cambodia with Pol Pot as the Commander in Chief.
The film is set in Cambodia - the location of the genuine killing fields where the Khmer Rouge regime killed and buried masses of people from 1975 to 1979.However, the movie was not filmed in Cambodia. It was instead shot at six locations: three Thai, two Canadian, and one American. For more information on the killing fields, and totalitarian communist rule in Cambodia please see the following links:http://www.edwebproject.org/sideshow/khmeryears/index.htmlhttp://www.infoplease.com/spot/khmer1.htmlhttp://www.dithpran.org/killingfields.htmFor more information on the 1984 film "The Killing Fields" please see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087553/.

The Khmer, Japanese, and Chinese all have historical and cultural reasons for tending towards isolation. The Khmer Empire focused on self-sufficiency and preserving their unique culture. Japan isolated itself to prevent foreign influence and preserve traditional values. China also practiced isolationism to maintain control over its vast territory and protect its cultural identity.
