It doesn't really have 255 heads. It most probably has one platter and two heads, at most.

You see, most HDDs today (anything newer than, say, 1998?) use LBA - that's Logical Block Addressing. It's a matter of simplicity, because new disks use something called zone bit recording, which means that on each given track, the further away from the center, the more sectors there are.

You see, disks can be addressed either physically (by mapping exactly one sector to a C/H/S position), or logically.

C/H/S, which stands for Cylinder/Head/Sector, is hanging around from the old MFM disks and DOS days, when disks were addressed physically. Physically here means that there was no translation to actual locations - BIOS handled the disk I/O. Unfortunately, this separation, combined with BIOS's inherent 16-bit-ness has quickly developed into a problem when new disks of great capacities (above 4GB) could not be addressed in this manner. They still can't be, to be honest, and the information given to BIOS is a bit pro-forma in that it doesn't tell the whole story. DOS programs can still access a PORTION of the space that way, but in order for the operating system to use the full space available, it has to understand LBA or access the hardware directly (which most OSes, Windows included, do).

So, again, these values have no real meaning. They certainly don't describe the physical properties of the disk. You see, there are up to two heads for any given platter, and as such, Your disk would have to have 128 platters! They're about 1mm thick, and with the heads in place, they take up some 5-6mm. That way, the disk would have to be some 77cm thick! No, these numbers are provided so that the BIOS and old (legacy) DOS programs can still make some use of the disk at all.

Keep in mind that this information is STILL used today, mostly by OS loaders like NTLDR, which need to only access a very small portion of space at the beginning of the disk. There resides a program that can take care of LBA addressing from that point. This is so that BIOS can handle calling the operating system starting procedure even with these limitations in place.

How much is in a 40gb hard drive?

Only as fast as its CPU. Doesn't matter the size of the hard drive - the hard drive does not determine processor speed.

How do you swipe a hard drive?

Assuming by wipe out you mean make the data permanently inaccessible, you can:electromagnetically degauss the drive, but this should be repeated several times in different orientations to make sure it isn't recoverable using special forensic recovery equipment that can detect the magnetic shadows of the datadisassemble the drive and shatter the recording platters in tiny pieces wit a hammeror probably the best is disassemble the drive and meltthe recording platters! (if you can't get them hot enough to melt, red heat is adequate as this is above the Curie Point at which all magnetism is lost)Assuming by wipe out you only mean you want the old data effectively unrecoverable but you wish to reuse the hard drive:The US DOD requires that hard drives be erased a minimum of 7 times by zeroing the entire disk then overwriting the entire disk with pseudorandom data to completely scramble any magnetic shadows of the data before the disk is reformatted.MACOS X provides both the 7 times to meet the DOD requirement and a 35 times for the really paranoid (or those that just have plenty of time to wait when formatting)

If a magnetic drive has four platters how many heads does it have?

Each platter on a hard drive has 2 heads.Every Additional Platter you can multiply x2Example:1 Platter x 2 = 2 Heads2 Platters x 2 = 4 Heads3 Platters x 2 = 6 Heads4 Platters x 2 = 8 Heads5 Platters x 2 = 10 HeadsETC...At least until some new hard drive Architecture comes into place.

A hard drive stores data on?

hard disk save data on platters. On platters there are tracks and sectors in which the data is saved.

What are hard disk cartridge?

A hard-diskis a component of a hard-disk drive: it is the circular disk on which the magnetic data is stored. The rigid nature of the platters in a hard drive is what gives them their name (as opposed to the flexible materials which are used to makefloppy disk).Hard drives typically have several platters which are mounted on the samespindle. A platter can store information on both sides, requiring two heads per platter.

What is the best way dispose of old laptops that have your info on the hard drives?

There is software that will overwrite data on the hard drive. Personally, I would dismantle the laptop, remove the drives, strip the drives and smash the platters. There is little value in selling old computers.

How do you replace the hard drive on a toshiba p35-s611?

You can access the hard drive from the bottom of the laptop. If you turn the laptop upside down, you'll find the hard drive door under the Toshiba sticker with the laptop serial number. Remove two screws from the hard drive cover and then remove the cover. Slide the hard drive to the right and remove it. Transfer the hard drive bracket to a new hard drive.

What type of storage drive contains spinning platters?

A hard disk drive consists of one or more thin disks that spin at high speed (1200 to 15000 rpm) while magnetic heads read data from them, hovering extremely close to them without making contact.
