Well, Helter Skelter, for one. Zodiac for another. Films based on true crimes, like grisly murders and serial killers, are typically based loosely on real events and while they may contain legit facts about the case, most are embellished to make the story more engaging. For example, we've got the Texas Chainsaw Massacre which is very loosely based on the serial killer Ed Gein, but Gein never killed anyone with a chainsaw, and initially most of the corpses he dealt with had been dug up from graveyards, and not killed by him. He did however wear his victims hair as wigs, faces as masks, and made a lampshade or two with stretched human skin, like the main villain in the TCSM. Another, more recent film based on a true story is Wolf Creek, an Australian film released in 2005. It is based on the case of some missing travelers who ventured out to a remote area of Australia to check out a crater impact area, which has become a tourist attraction. They are abducted by a sadistic killer and two of the victims are never found. One thing we need to keep in mind is while the surviving character does return to tell his disturbing tale, some of the script has been completely fabricated because there is no way he could really know what the other two victims were dealing with while he was tied up in a separate location. I've probably missed a ton of films, but that should suffice. There are Horror films based on events that really happened, however we can never assume that they depict the events as they actually ocurred.
