The terms First, Second and Third Worldwere originally used to classify countries regarding their alliances in the Cold War. This reference was then generalized into referring to the level of development of the industry, economy and lifestyle of the countries, and has been replaced with the terms Developed, Developing and Under-developed.

According to the HDI or Human Development Index of the United Nations, New Zealand has a rating of 0.95 on a scale where 1= fully developed and 0= fully undeveloped, which puts New Zealand in the top category of development.

This rating takes may variables into account, and while some variables for New Zealand are not high in their ratings, overall New Zealand is definitely a developed country.
One rating is per capita GDP, and New Zealand is ranked at 23rd to 29th (out of a total of 170 -192) depending on the ranking organisation.

Compared to say India or China, No.

We have no car industry, or atomic bombs, and most of our hi-tech products are imported.

We do have a temperate climate, and a good standard of living, easy access to unspoilt or undeveloped spaces, a pretty good health system, and probably an egalitarian society.

Although the South African economy may be 4 times the size of the New Zealand economy and post an average GDP growth rate of 3 to 4 percent per year. New Zealand with it's low population and low unemployment rate has a higher per capita GDP rate when compared to South Africa. New Zealand may be considered a First world country, but many argue that South Africa's economic potential and attractive growth rates still surpass New Zealand in FDI due to it's role on the continent and the world. So per capita New Zealand would appear richer, but as a country South Africa's GDP is Richer or higher than New Zealand's overall GDP.

Contrary to popular belief, there's poverty in every state, globally. Poverty is merely a line drawn across a percentage of the population whom fall into a catagory which is foretold to be "poverty striken", be it x- wealth, unable to provide shelter or food for themselves or other such criteria.

Aotearoa/New Zealand does not belong to the group of super rich countries, but neither does it belong to the group of very poor ones. We are in the middle. Our closest companions are perhaps the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
