Darry treat's Ponyboy the way he does in the book because he is scared of losing someone else that he loves. Darry was just being overprotective because he didn't want to lose Ponyboy like his mother and father.
Because he loves him, Darry is trying to raise Ponyboy in the only way he knows how: by being overprotective and pushing him to his maximum potential. He wants Ponyboy to do his very best. He just goes about it the wrong way.
He hadn't raised two boys before, and he might get put into a boy's home.
Darry loves Ponyboy a lot, so that's why he's always pressuring him to get straight A's and succeed in his life. He doesn't want his little bro to end up like the rest of the friends in the gang:full of violence and breaking rules. He's always hollering at him and wants the best for pony.
yes he does. would he have cried in the hospital when Ponyboy was there? think about it. would he??? I agree with the person who said that Darry would not have cried if he did not care and love ponyboy. Darry just has a hard time expressing his feelings and when he does it is usually ends up in a shouting match or some other way. Darry loves both his brothers very much and wants to protect them and make sure they reach their potential im typing on wikianswers...weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee............ Im having fun! Awkward.... do u think im weird???
One half of him believes that Darry does not love him, but the other half knows that Darry loves him and cares for him. It is just that Ponyboy for whatever reason does not want to believe it. He most likely talked himself into believing that lie.
Darry- Pony doesn't think Darry cares about him because he is always yelling at him. Also, Darry will tell Pony he needs to have lees fun and study more, then when he is studying Darry will tell him to study less and have more fun. Pony thinks Darry only likes Soda. Sodapop- Him and Pony are buddies, and Soda always sticks up for Pony when Darry yells at him. Also, when Pony started having nightmares about his deceased parents, Soda started sleeping in the same bed with Pony to comfort him.
Because when Ponyboy has those dreams, the ones he can not remember, is terrifing to Ponyboy and Pony either wakes up screaming bloody murder or in a cold sweet. Darry is concerned because the dreams are in a way harming his brother.

Because Darry and Ponyboy were putting him in the middle of their fights like always. He does not like being split in half because he can not take either side because he loves them both. In the movie it is the same way, Darry and Ponyboy were putting him in the middle of one of their fights again and to top it off he got his letter back un-opened from his now ex-girlfriend Sandy.
Because when Ponyboy has those dreams, the ones he can not remember, is terrifing to Ponyboy and Pony either wakes up screaming bloody murder or in a cold sweet. Darry is concerned because the dreams are in a way harming his brother.
Either Ponyboy and/or Darry. Ponyboy is smart and can get out of the environment that he is in if he chooses to and he will if his brothers have any say in that. Darry is the same way, but since he has to and wants to care for his brothers he is stuck for the time being. Once his brothers are of age and can take care of themselves then he could do it. Also if the Curtis parents were still alive then there would have no doubt that Darry could have gotten out.
He is the strong one in the house so he has to act tough
I think he's more of a "father figure"... Darry may have acted coldly toward Ponyboy and his brother Sodapop, but this was likely his way of "being strong" since their parents were dead. Context shows that Darry cared very much about them, and especially wanted Ponyboy to have the chances in life he'd given up (like going to college), to keep them together in the same house.
its not that darry doesn't like him, but he is just so overprotective of him it seems that way
In chapter one you meet the narrator, ponyboy, who lacks common sense but is very smart. You also meet his oldest brother, Darry, who is the head of the house since their parents died. Sodapop is the middle child who is charming and cheerful.
Soda and Darry are different in one obvious way Soda understands Pony. Darry tries his best to push Pony boy to the right thing but does it an a way that makes Pony despise him. While soda is loving caring energetic and optimistic and knows how pony is therefore knows he should listen to his feelings analyze the problem then give a solution instead of forcing it upon him.
