The East India Company was a British joint-stock trading company that controlled large amounts of India with its own private armies, using its military and administrative powers to control the region. The East India Company also controlled territory in China, Burma and other East Asian regions.

Following the Indian rebellion of 1857, the British Crown assumed direct control of the regions under the administration of the East India Company. In 1874 the company was disbanded and the company's remaining functions were absorbed by the British government.
