Before the British Raj, travelling from one place to another in India was risky due to dacoits and thugees. The first thing the British did was put an end to them and thus increase safety for journeys throughout South Asia. Besides the British unified India thus there were similarity in official codes and customs and there were no need of border checks within India.

Finally the railways, modern roads, postal services and telegraphs/ telephones were invented in Britain/Europe/U.S.A. and the British brought these technologies to India. They invested money and labour in setting up good road, rail, postal and telegraph networks throughout India. Modern banking practices brought by the British facilitated greater and easy trade, though India did have rudimentary banking systems before the British for this purpose (Hawala).

Due to this Indians moved around more, mingles with each other. Due to the unifying English language and the influence of modern ideas, the Indian freedom movement was born to take India out of the Empire. Besides Independent India got these infrastructures free when it left the empire which was very beneficial.
