∙ 12y agoAccording to the most popular and belivable theory these colors don't have a special meaning, they were taken from the crest of Carniola, an Austrian dutchy that is now a part of Slovenia. The crest of Carniola was a white shield, and on it a blue eagle with red decorations (I think these were the crescent across the chest, crown, talons, tongue) . According to the flagmaking rules this crest translates into the white, blue and red tricolor.
However, this is the the same order of colors as in the flag of of Russia. Some say this is no concidence. When the flag was made, the Slovenes wanted to stress their Slavic origins and separate themselves from the Germans who ruled in Austria.
Some people also stress taht the colors of the flag are the same as in the flag of France (after the revolution). In France the Blue, White and Red should represent the motto of the revolution Liberty (Blue as the free sky), Brotherhood (red as the blod that binds brothers) and Equailty (white as a symbol of purity - no differences). This is a very poetic description, but I doubt it had much to do with the birth of Slovene flag.
