The Blue Nile is the deepest point of the River Nile in Africa. A small spring which is located at Gishe Abbai, which is at an altitude of approximately 5, 940 feet (or about 1, 800 metres), is the sacred source of the Blue Nile.

The distance between the source of the Blue Nile and its confluence is reported to be between 1, 460 kilometres and 1, 600 kilometres (which is between 907 metres and 1, 000 metres). It flows through gorges in the highlands of Ethiopia. These highlands are believed to be practically impossible to penetrate. The Blue Nile River flows to a depth of 1, 500 metres (which is 4, 950 feet). This depth can be compared to the depth of the Grand Canyon, which is located in the United States of America.
