I'm not sure if this is the island you mean, but Greenland is northeast of Canada.

The Island is called Ellesmore Island and belongs to Canada. There is a dispute about one of the little islands between this island and Greenland called Hans island (obviously between Greenland and Canada). I'm not sure why because there is nothing there :-), and it's too darn cold to live.

I think the population of Ellesmore island is something like 100 plus maybe up to 100 more of military origin.

It is Canada's 10th province called New Found land, unless you are thinking of Baffin island which is even further north.

Most of the islands that are listed as being in The Northwest Territories are in Nunavut as of 12 years ago. The arctic archipelago in Nunavut is famous for having over 36,000 islands. i live on a peninsula on the east coast of nova scotia, in the same municipality as "Sable island", listed above. when i look out the window I see the water, and across a short expanse of that water there is another peninsula, 10 minutes away. There are more than 127 islands just between here and there. in the coves and bays which lie within a 30 minute drive of my house there are several hundred more islands.
