the mainstream religion in France is Catholicism. The second one is Islam with nearly 10% of the population. Protestantism and Jewish religions come third and foutth with less than 2% each. A large proportion of the population also claim to be non-religious.

Most French describe themselves as Chistians (about 75% as Roman Catholics, about 1% as Protestants). That would mean that about 50 million Christians out of a population of 65 million people.

As with any demographic poll of religion, and especially Atheism, there might be slight inaccuracies. Sometimes, "non-affiliated" or "Agnostic" will be considered "Atheist". And, many times, atheists are afraid to identify themselves. That being said; according to Wikipedia sources, in a 2003 poll, 33% identify as Atheist. In another poll, it was 32%.

According to the CIA Factbook: Roman Catholic 83%-88%, Protestant 2%, Jewish 1%, Muslim 5%-10%, unaffiliated 4% out of a population of 60,180,529 (July 2003 est.) So if we take the middle value for RC believers in France as being 85% of the population then some 51 million people are Roman Catholic, 1.25 Million are Protestant, 650,000 are Jews while around 4.8 Million are Muslim with a further 2 million or so unaffiliated give or take the odd million or so.
