The Mohawk people were Native North Americans of the Iroquoian language family and of the Northeast culture area. After the American Revolution, many Mohawks moved to Canada, most on reservations at Brantford, Ontario, and at the Bay of Quinte. Two major US settlements remain in Franklin and Saint Lawrence counties in New York State.

The original Iroquois League was often known as the Five Nations, and comprised the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca nations. The Kanienkehaka, or Mohawk tribe of Native American people live around Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River in what is now Canada and the United States. Their traditional homeland is further South, in New York State, around present day Albany, Mohawks became keepers of the Eastern Door, guarding the members against invasions from that direction.
