Well he start's to fall in love with her little by little every episode. At first he just wanted her because she looked like Katrine but as you know she refused because she loves Stefan. Well Every episode he got to know her a little more and figured out she's not Katrine and he stared to like her for who she was. He started to consider her as a friend. But he Realized that he loved her ( not in a romantic way) in the episode As I lay Dying. That episode was all about Damon. Damon was about to die by a Ware Wolf bite and Elena Kissed him good bye (he didn't die) my guess would be that time.

∙ 12y agoit was long back when a girl named katherine came to live in damon and stefans house,later stefan came to know that katherine is a vampire when she bit him,but still he loved her and she sis too in return.later damon also falls in love with katherine and she does the same with him too but loves stefan a bit more.later when vampires began getting killed and also she has to choose whom she will marry,she pretends to kill herself and vanishes forever.and she is about 500 years old.but before leving stefan turns into a vampire and he also turns damon into a vampire and damon hates stefan for doing so,and wants to kill him and they part ways forever.
later stefen turns into a vegetarian vampire but damon always feeds on human blood and becomes strong.stefan meets a girl named elena in high school/college am not sure on that and she is a replica of katherine,i.e an exact copy.so stefan fells in love with her ,she comes to know that he is a vampire but still she loves him.now damon returns back and he starts liking elena and try to influence her into liking him but she remains loyal to stefan.so the series follows,with katherine coming back and the brothers killing her,and stefan and elena together and in the end bonnie and damon would be together.
