There is evidence of modern man (homo sapiens) inhabiting the area about 75,000 years ago. For thousands of year the San peoples hunted and dwelled in the area, leaving rock art paintings dating back to 27,000 years ago. The Khokhoe peoples, a nomadic group of tribes, and sheep farmers were dominant in the area when the first European settlers arrived to found a victualing station for the Dutch East India Company in 1652*. This may be construed as the year that the actual city that became Cape Town was founded.

* 6 April 1652 Jan van Riebeeck and his team landed there with 3 ships belonging to the East India Company.
