Both Jon and Kate Gosselin's families live close to the central Pennsylvania area where the Gosselin's live.
Jon's father worked in the same area where they currently live, but died when the sextuplets were little. Jon's mother lives nearby, but not close enough to be involved in the daily goings-on of the family. Jon's brothers have their own lives and keep in touch with Jon with phone calls and texting. See related link for a transcript of an interview where Jon discussed the family dynamic.
Kate's family lives close by, but for a variety of reasons are only involved with the family when they are off camera. Kate's parents and one brother live closest, while her other siblings live in the region... so they are close.. but not close enough to be involved in their daily business. In 2014 Kates sister revealed that she had not communicated with her sister in 6 yesrs. While Kate tweeted that she did not know her sisters phone number. Researchers noted that the phone number turned up at the top of a simple search using a major internet sesrch engine. Clearly it is a complicated, and painful, relationship with two sides hurting, and who all value familial ties.
Jon was asked about the grandparents in a 2009 interview with Shauna Lake of the "Utah News." He stated that his father is dead, and his mother doesn't live nearby, but she also didn't want to be filmed. As far as Kate's parents, of which she has 3 sisters & 1 brother. Jon stated there are like 19 grandchildren and her parents have nothing to do with any of them or any of their grandchildren. Jon described it as a weird family situation, but how it was with Kate's family: "it's like when the kids left the nest, they left the nest".
It is some people's opinions that this combination of families: EQUALS=two totally dysfunctional families that has contributed why Jon & Kate act/behave as they do.
Kate's sister-in law Jodi used to help babysit all the children. At one point, Kate had a fit and falling out with her brother and his wife, when TLC wanted to pay Jodi for the work she did on the show.
There was also an incident with Kate's father. His church had come up with some donated clothing, but because they didn't match, Kate didn't want them. Spawning a fight with her father, thus her leaving and joining another church. Thus Kate has alienated herself from her siblings & parents,
