Dorothy Gale, her pet dog Toto, and their three friends the Tin Woodman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion found many obstacles on the way to the Emerald City of Oz. One such obstacle was a poppy field. The poppies made Toto, Dorothy, and the Cowardly Lion sleepy. But the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were unaffected. In the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz', author and series originator Lyman Frank Baum [May 15, 1856-May 6, 1919] had the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman rescue Dorothy and Toto by carrying them out of the deadly field. But the Lion was too heavy. Fortunately, the Tin Woodman had saved the life of the beautiful, gracious Queen of the Field Mice. In return, the petite Queen rounded up her subjects to pull the Lion out of the field. In the beloved 1939 film version, the poppy field was put in the way of the five friends by the Wicked Witch of the West. But Glinda the Good managed to nip the evil endeavor in the bud. She sent a beautiful, light snow that awakened the friends before their sleep became eternal.

The coming of the cyclone and Dorothy Gale and her pet dog Toto being trapped in the family farmhouse as it is carried away is what happens in the first chapter of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz."Specifically, the chapter is titled "The Cyclone." It begins with an introduction of readers to Dorothy, Toto and Dorothy's Uncle Henry and Aunt Em as residents of rural Kansas. Aunt Em manages to get into the cellar, but Toto hides under a bed and Dorothy chases after him. During the beginning moments of the cyclone, Dorothy sits quietly on the floor while Toto runs about and ends up in the hole where the trap door is. He is held up by the strong air pressure. Dorothy retrieves him, closes the door, and both end up falling asleep on one of the beds.
The Dormouse`The Dormouse is asleep again,' said the Hatter, and he poured a little hot tea upon its nose.
A field of poppies causes Dorothy Gale to fall asleep in "The Wizard of Oz."The original 1900 book edition and the beloved 1939 film version of "The Wizard of Oz" are quite different. Among the similarities is the incident in the poppy field, which is one of the events that the book presents and the movie version retains. But in the book Dorothy is rescued by her travelling companions, who get the gracious Queen of the Field Mice to remove the Cowardly Lion also. In the movie, Glinda causes snow to fall and thereby protects everyone from the somnolent dangers of the poppies.
The Queen of the Field Mice was saved by the killing power of the Tin Woodman's axe. She returned the favor by saving the life of the Cowardly Lion. For he and Dorothy Gale fell asleep in the poppy fields. The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were able to carry Dorothy away. But the Lion was too heavy. The Queen had good reason to fear Toto, Dorothy's pet dog; and the Lion. But she put her trust in the Tin Woodman that she and her mice wouldn't be harmed. And so they all pulled the Lion to safety.
