Lord William Bentick who was the Governor General of India at that time, started the English Education system in India.
But, it was Thomas Babington Macaulay who was instrumental in convincing the Governor General to adopt English as the medium of instruction in higher education, from the sixth year of schooling onwards, rather than Sanskrit or Persian then used in the institutions supported by the East India Company.
Hope this answers your question.....
In ancient India the system of education was through Gurukuls where the students were sent for education. All the students had to live in the gurukul and study there only. There were different gurukuls for boys and girls and the medium of education was Sanskrit or Hindi. The gurukuls are still there spread all over the country imparting education in the ancient style but with the British coming to India, the education system changed a lot into western system or English style of education. Thus the current system is the dual system both having their own values
The British introduced the English Language as well as the western system of education in India. They did so during their rule over India in the 19th century. This was done so that the Indians were moulded according to the British needs and were able to serve the government. Thus, the British could have able officers at a low expense rather getting those from England. Therefore, English was introduced in India.

India was ruled by the Brits for many decades. Business is conducted in English and higher education uses English in India. Many people there use it as their primary language and the native languages are secondary for them. You will notice that the English the Indians use sounds very British or Queen's English style. All international business in India is conducted in English too.
Western education started in India at colonial times as the europeans needed to literate the Indians so that they can make out thir work. If they r not literate then how will they work in Industries & Factories.
English Education in India revolutionized the way people thought and communicate with the other parts of the world. Even within the country, it's the best medium which binds North, South and North East India.
Lord William Bentinck introduced western or English education in India in 1835.

It can not denied that English medium students do better results in job markets than others in India. For their proficiency in English speaking, they fare better in interviews, whereas the others drag their feet. An English medium student can easily socialise while their counterparts hesitate. Discipline, good manners are authomatically imbibed among the English medium students.
