the British decided to divide India into two nations- Muslim Pakistan and Hindu-dominated, India
The split of India into two countries, India and Pakistan, occurred in 1947, primarily due to religious differences, with India being predominantly Hindu and Pakistan formed as a Muslim-majority state. The partition led to significant communal violence, mass migrations, and profound human suffering, as millions were displaced along newly drawn borders. The legacy of partition continues to shape the political, social, and cultural landscape of both nations.
India was divided into two nations in 1947 primarily due to religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims. The demand for a separate Muslim state, led by the All-India Muslim League under Muhammad Ali Jinnah, stemmed from fears that Muslims would not receive adequate political representation in a predominantly Hindu India. This culminated in the creation of Pakistan as a separate nation, leading to significant communal violence and mass migrations as populations were divided along religious lines.
India remained a dominion of the British Crown until August 15, 1947, when it gained independence. This marked the end of British colonial rule, which had lasted for nearly two centuries. The country was subsequently partitioned into two independent nations, India and Pakistan.
