Roger Williams, did not support the New England Way. He opposed forced church attendance. Because of his belief, he was forced to leave the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He fled southward and founded the colony of Rhode Island in 1626.

JRC: I find this to be a deplorable answer. It is so general in one place and so partial in another as to be very misleading. Mass Moments says: "Having been both a witness to and a victim of religious persecution, Roger Williams believed that most of the wars in the world were the result of religious conflict. He advocated total religious toleration, even as other Puritan ministers preached "Tis Satan's policy, to plead for an indefinite and boundless toleration." Unlike most Massachusetts ministers, Williams did not believe that the Bible demanded punishment of religious heretics. His interpretation of scripture made him a serious threat to the authority of a colonial society that depended on the Bible as a life guide." He also was a threat to the Massachusetts Authorities and the King of England's policy of giving huge grants of land to others in "New England." Why? Because he honored the dignity, worth, and rights of Native Americans. And therefore he believed they should be paid for their lands. He also didn't try to convert the Indians after he bought the land for his Providence Plantation from the Naragansetts, but allowed them, Jews, all others to live free from coercion of consciences, beliefs, and practices in the colony while exercising their rights to Religious Liberty. The Rhode Island Colony also differed from most of the English settlements in that Indians were not tortured, harassed, or killed, and treaties with them were honored and not broken as a matter of course. The answer is erroneous as to dates also--RW was found guilty of "newe and dangerous opinions" and banished from Massachusetts Bay Colony October 9th, 1635, (not in 1626) when he was approximately 32 (being born in 1603).
