Because our society has about as much taste in women as a guy who orders his burgers with nothing but the meat and cheese. To put it simply: the European standard of beauty is held up as the one and only ideal beauty in the western world. Black women use harmful chemicals to straighten their hair because of this. Jewish and Middle Eastern women get nose jobs because of this. Asian women have surgery to change their eyelids because of this. There are women from India who actually bleach their own skin because of this. It is unfair. Through the generations, hair straightening has sadly become so ingrained in black culture that most women do not even realize they are carrying the torch of their own oppression. Styling natural black hair is nearly a lost art. Even when they are aware of this cultural bias, many black women choose hair straightening and weaves anyway because there are simply more options.
