Reason is simple, we know earth revolves around the sun, in the winter earth comes closer to sun in it's elliptical orbit.

The distance between the Earth and the sun during winter is more than during summer, that is reason why earth gets more energy from the sun in summer compared with winter.

The Earth orbits the sun in an oval shape. During the time where the Earth is closest to the sun, the season will be summer. The closer the Earth is the more rays from the sun that will hit it. More rays, more energy.

The reason this happens is because in summer the sun is closer to the earth, albeit only probably a single inch closer.

Does sun give off more heat in the summer?

No, the sun does not give off more heat in the summer. It only seems hotter because the axis of the Earth, that you are on, is now pointed closer to the sun, where as in winter you are actually farther from the sun, since the axis is pointed in the other direction, and therefore you do not experience the same warmth as in summer.

Why is the sun warmer in the summer?

During summer months, the part of the world having summer is close to a right angle to the rays of the sun, giving the most heat to the area exposed. During winter, the tilt of the earth means the sun's rays strike the earth at an angle, meaning that they spread over a larger area, giving less heat. When it is summer in the northern half of the world, it is winter in the southern half. Temperature difference is not due to distance from the sun, but due to the tilt of the earth. If distance was the determining factor, both north and south would be the same temperature.
