The West Canadians were against the confederation of Canada for many reasons. For one, a plan was formed to build a railway across Canada. This would cost a grand amount of money. They were also against the confederation because of taxes being sent away to the Eastern parts of Canada.
Canada West is the term used to describe Upper Canada after unification of Upper and Lower Canada into the Province of Canada. After confederation they became the Province of Ontario in the Canadian Confederation.
There were many reasons for not joining Confederation. For example they did not know for sure they would be able to dominate Confederation as they have. There was the risk that all members of Confederation were going to be equal. If that happened Canada West would lose the advantage of a larger population.
They were also isolated from the other members of Confederation by Lower Canada. Having a French and Catholic dominated province controlling access to the ocean could be an issue, and what about Catholics in Canada West.
