The French Republic was fighting with the British close to the French mainland and sough to force the British to withdraw from this side of the conflict. Napoleon decided to capture Egypt as the first stage in an effort to threaten British India, and thus force Great Britain to make peace with France in Europe.
In 1798 Napoleon used 30,000 troops when he invaded Egypt. Napoleon believed that Egypt was a weak point in Britain's world empire. One goal of the invasion was to control the Mediterranean's route to India.

The country was in turmoil. They overthrew their King and organized a government run by a Council. Napoleon was recognized for his leadership in the Army that fought in Egypt so he was elected to be the First Council (or Premier Counsul). Later he promoted himself as Emperor. Napoleon was pro-revolution and had supported the Jacobins. He was also literally raised in the army and was recognized for his brilliance in his early Italian campaigns. He ruled in Italy and was later requester by Abbe Sieyes, a member of the Directory in France, to come back to France and put down a rebellion. There he secured a coup'detat.

Before Napoleon's arrival in Egypt, the Copts were part of the Egyptian Mamluk Government as accountants. When Napoleon began to rule the country, he desired that the Copts would continue in their professions, so they ended up helping sustain Napoleon's government in Egypt. Unfortunately, because of this perceived alliance between the Copts and the French, there was strong Anti-Coptic sentiment throughout Egypt and there were several calls for genocide against the Copts. Thankfully, this never occurred, but lower level violence against Copts became more common.
