Falling ratings in the US.

When Star Trek was cancelled it did not suffer from low ratings. In fact, it was a top twenty show. However, the special effects of the day did cost a great deal. Because of this, the show was cancelled and to the heartbreak of millions of fans was replaced by Bracken's World.
The popularity of the show generating 3 Spin offs and movies proves that perhaps this was not the best decision.
like any other show, for low ratings CursingL: Actually Star Trek had very good ratings. The company that was producing the show wanted to cancel Star Trek because they wanted to do more comedy stuff.
Unlike the original series which was cancelled due to poor ratings, TNG was only cancelled because the producers thought it was time for them to move to the big screen, and what with Voyager coming along they didn't want 3 series running at the same time (DS9 was still being made too). One had to go, and as TNG was a huge success, in fact the most successful of ALL the Trek shows it was deemed that it would have more chance of doing well in movies.
It was Paramount's policy to not let any Star trek series run longer than 7 seasons.
