Why would cylinder 2 3 not fire on a 1992 ford ranger 2.3l 4 cylinder?

Offhand, I can think of a couple of possibilities immediately. The first would be a collapsed hydraulic lifter, preventing a valve from opening. Maybe a bent push rod (between the lifter and rocker arm).

If it's a lack of spark, it could be the ignition coil. Chances are that you have one coil for every two cylinders, or the control for the coil not delivering the proper pulse.

The spark plug wires are usually made with a carbon conductor and possibly one or both leads have breaks in them, but that'll usually just cause a weak spark or even the wires could be reversed and firing when they shouldn't.

dead battery or starter is gone. State your problem better. Does the engine crank, but not fire? Does it fire a little bit, but not quite enough to start? Is it out of gas? Enough oil? Clogged fuel filter(s)? Will the horn blow while cranking? (If not, insufficient current to starter). Clogged air filter? Old spark plugs? Old gas? Recent work done on it? Spark seen by removing spark plug cable and letting spark run freely against engine (may have failed ignition if you see no spark). Timing belt/chain old? If the engine has over 75,000 miles on it, you may need to replace something. Chilton's manuals are for girls changing lamps; Haynes manuals are for true shade-tree mechanics. Archetype says... Check your fuel pump, when you turn your key to "ON" can you hear the pump working? If not, replace. Also, could be your coil to the distributor, the ignition module or something as common as your timing.
