The writers of The Vampire Diaries have not released their future plans for Elena and Damon. They did kiss mouth to mouth in the second season.

yes Stefan and Elena end up together in the book though in the book Damon tells Elena that Stefan is dead and Elena believed him. I didn't read the whole series but from what I read that is what happened. Yes, the mian series they are prety much through out but in The Return series its's pretty hard to figure out right now. Two books are out, Nightfall and the most recent Shadow Souls and the third one is predicted to be out sometime this year titled Midnight. I haven't picked up SS but I'm guessing they'll be together, she said all of hr books have happy endings...

The first time they kiss in the books happens in 'The Struggle'. In the Season 1 finale, Damon thought he kissed Elena but it turned out to be Katherine instead. Damon kisses Elena on the forehead, if you'd like to count that in episode 8. Also Damon kissed Elena in the Return the first episode of season 2 he had just been rejected by Katherine she had just told him she never loved him and it was always Stefan. He came into Elena's bedroom it was basically a forced kiss Something that is important to know is in the Return the first episode of season 2 Damon says to Elena he kissed her and thought she kissed him back this was when Katherine was pretending to be Elena and Damon kissed her You know why is it such a surprise that I would kiss you? That's not a surprise, I'm surprised that you thought I'd kiss you back. Now I'm hurt. Elena kissed Damon in the season finale titled "As I lay dying" her is the scene I know you love Stefan and that it will always be Stefan. But I love you. You should know that. I do. You should have met me 1864, you would have liked me. I like you now. Just the way you are. Thank you. You're welcome There was also a kiss in season 3, episode 18. When Elena made a move on Damon!!

Season 4 will focus on Elena's struggle to accept her identity as a vampire. We will see Stefan and Elena together at least for a little while. And there's a 99.9% likelihood that Klaus body did not burn up in that coffin.
