Ford DIN Radio Removal Tools - $10.95 DIN Tools are required to safely remove the radio from many Ford vehicles. DM-10-22
These removal tools are also widely available and price from free with radio purchase, to around $4.(Auto parts, Walmart,
You only need the standard Ford radio, U shaped removal tools, readily & cheaply available at an autoparts store, Walmart, etc.
- Use the removal tools to pull the radio assembly out of the dash - note: you do NOT need to remove the plastic trim piece! :)
- Pull the 2 wire harness connectors off & disconnect the radio antenna.
As you can imagine, re-installing is just a matter of connecting the wire harnesses & antenna - align and push the radio back in until you hear/feel the side-clips click back into place.
TIPS:
Go to your local auto parts store (I went to Advanced Auto Parts in the Chicago area) and they sell the radio removal tool for about $5.00. All the "tool" consists of is two pieces of metal, about the diameter of a metal coat hanger, bent in a "U" shape. You stick them into the 4 holes in the radio and just wiggle it and pull it out.

Radio removal FordTried the coat hanger deal ended up damaging the clips. Had to remove dash to get to the clips from the backside. Better to buy the "removal tool", it's about $2 at Autozone. Ends are tapered and have a retainer on the end that fits into the radio clips. Follow instructions on packageYou need to go to Wal-Mart or Best Buy and buy a removal tool for a couple of bucks. It's u-shaped and made of wire.
You simply put this tool on the notches that show on the side of the radio, push the tool in and pull out the radio. It's really that simple.
If you don't want to purchase the special tools, you can use 4 - 1/8" Allen wrenches. Just be carefull not to insert them more than 1/2". It's a little tricky, but beats buying a tool you may only use once.
Use two radio tools available anywhere insert them into the holes in the face plate (there u shaped and fit vertically. Push them in till you hear a click the push slightly out ward on the radio tools while pulling out on them.
Or you can make the tools out of a wire coat hangar (if you are a cheapskate like me) :) Just fasten 2 "U"s wide enough to span the holes from top to bottom.
Dude, why are you asking, im like 12 and i don't know how to drive a car let alone get a radio out of it <3

∙ 14y agoI bought the removal tool but it offers no clue on hw to use it.
Improved answer: Got mine at Pep Boys, called the OEM Radio Removal Tools, part number CK-FDRT, for about $8. The rods are about 1/8" in diameter and bent into U-shape that fit into the upper and lower holes on the left and right of the radio face. The ends are machined to a taper but have balls at the very end.
The trick is to push the rods no more than about 1" into the holes. Any further and most likely what is happening is that the rods slip past the clips and end up doing nothing. After giving up with home made coat hanger tools (having jammed them in way too far) I gently inserted the real tools and then wiggled the radio. It won't come out at first, but you will notice it is loose and can move left and right. This is because you have successfully collapsed the clips.
Those clips are a strange design. It's amazing they work. It's contra-intuitive to push in to pull clips toward the radio body. It doesn't make sense until you get the radio out and study the geometry of the clip. But they work. Push the tool in until the radio loosens, then holding the U-shaped tools, push in and out multiple times until the radio begins to move out more each time. It will take some doing. The tools let go a couple of times. The rear of the radio has a rear support that is like a plastic drawer slide center clip. It rides on a steel channel that is in the dash. This rear support is also inducing drag. You also are pulling the two wiring harnesses (power and speaker wires) and the antenna coax. Add all this drag and it's no wonder the radio doesn't want to move out initially.
The little balls on the end of the tools actually click into the clips and hold the radio somewhat. That's why you can pull on the tools to remove the radio. I thought I had bent the clips with the coat hanger when in reality the coat hangers had merely slipped through the clips and were not working.
The real tools allowed me to remove the radio properly.

∙ 14y agoOne way would be to unplug the radio wire harness for some time. Have no idea how long it would take. To remove the radio:
* buy the inexpensive radio removal tools
* insert a tool into the 2 vertical holes on each side of the face of the radio until you feel a click
* push the tops of the u-shaped tools outwards to release the retainer clips while pulling the radio out.
There may be an easier way to reset with a magic combination of button pushing, but unplugging is for sure.
One more option: disconnect the vehicle battery. This will also reset the engine computer.
