I believe Joel, needs to go back and study the History of Country Music a little more harder. Kitty Wells, the Queen of Country Music had recorded over 80 singles and 43 albums, by 1973. Many of those singles reached into the Top #10 and some reached into the Top #5 spot on the country music charts. Out of the 80 singles, Kitty Wells charted 23 times at the #1 spot, and still holds the record of the most #1 hits for a female country singer (that would include more than Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, and even Reba McEntire).
Linda Ronstadt has recorded about a half a dozen country singles, but, not all reached #1 on the country music charts. Linda went from Rock to Country, and spent the rest of her career as a Pop Music artist. If the great and beautiful ladies of country music such as Loretta, Tammy, Dolly, and Reba have been unable to break Kitty's record. Then, I don't think Linda has any chance either! For reaching #1 on the country charts 23 times, isn't a very easy thing to do!!
Interestingly, the vast majority of the top songs of the 1950s on the country charts (then called "Country and Western") were sung by men. Some country vocal groups, like the Browns, had a woman in the group, but solo women were not the big hit-makers of that era. There were, however, a few exceptions-- several women who consistently had hits throughout much of the 1950s. One of the biggest was Kitty Wells, and the other was Jean (short for Imogene) Shepard. Later in the 50s, you can also see hits by Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee on the charts.

Kitty Wells
As far as I know Kitty Wells never was an actress in Gunsmoke. There was a Miss Kitty played be Amanda Blake. Kitty Wells was a Country Music singer in the 50's, 60's and 70's.
Kitty wells became the first female singer to top the country charts when 'It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels' went to No. 1 in 1952. In 1935, Patsy Montana became the first female country singer to have a million selling record when she released 'I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart'. Jeannie C. Riley became the first woman to have a song top both the country and pop charts with her 'Harper Valley PTA' in 1968.
Kitty Wells was a country music singer, not an author. She is best known for her hit song "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," which was one of the first country songs by a female artist to top the charts. Wells influenced many female country singers and was one of the first women to achieve superstardom in the genre.
