I just performed a transmission service to my 2000 Jeep Cherokee and the dealer and the auto part store couldn't answer this question for me. So, I drained the Transmission Fluid and dropped the pan and captured all of the transmission fluid and measured it. It was 5 quarts exactly.
5 Quarts!!
4-6 quarts. Depends on tranny. Be careful of what type of fluid to use.
The AW4 transmission uses Dextron fluid.
For a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4.7L, the automatic transmission fluid capacity depends on a couple factors -- whether it's 2WD (RWD) or 4WD -- and also what specific transmission the vehicle was equipped with. For the 42RE transmission: 4.0 quarts For the 45RFE or 5-45RFE 2WD (RWD) models: 5.5 quarts For the 45RFE or 5-45RFE 4WD models: 6.6 quarts The recommended fluid type is MOPAR ATF+4
If it is a manual, you put the correct fluid in it. If an automatic, do not start the engine. You need to drain it out of the transmission.
The transmission fluid capacity of a 1995 Jeep Cherokee is 8.5 quarts. When the fluid and filter are changed, only 4 quarts are needed.

Approx 5 quarts for filter service, and 12 quarts for dry fill.
The type of transmission fluid to use is Dexron III. Capacity is about 8 quarts depending on if the transmission is dry, including the torque converter.

14 quarts
Transmission fluid is added down the dipstick tube.
