How many quarts of transmission fluid goes in a Jeep Cherokee?

I just performed a transmission service to my 2000 Jeep Cherokee and the dealer and the auto part store couldn't answer this question for me. So, I drained the Transmission Fluid and dropped the pan and captured all of the transmission fluid and measured it. It was 5 quarts exactly.

4-6 qts........Dextron III with Mercon.

The ATF4 was for the Chrysler transmissions and not the AW4 the Cherokee used (made by Asian warner).

Im pretty sure that ATF, ATF+2, ATF+3 and ATF+4 are what all Diamler Chrysler vehicles use....ATF etc is a Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep specialty transmission fluid...any other type will ruin the transmission for sure.

Your transmisison dipstick will also tell you what type to use, along with the owners manual....

It depends on what type of transmission you have, if you have a 42RE and if you're changing the fluid it's about 5-7 quarts. I just changed mine (2003 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 v6 4X2) and it was 6 quarts. The best thing to do, if your changing fluid, is start with 4 quarts and move your way up a pint at a time. Follow the owners manual on how to check (engine running, go through gears and check in neutral). The dip stick on mine is different than the manual but the stick explains the temp vs. the level.

it depends on how much you drain out because there still going to be fluid in the torque converter and the fluid lines. after drooping the pan i would start refilling it but put only 4 quarts of ATF+4 then start the vehicle and bringing it to operating temp then put the car into gear and hold on to the brake for 4 to 5 minutes then check the level and if its the OK range then just leave and take the car for a ride so the tranny gets completely warmed up. then check it again. this time the level will be slightly higher then before, which is normal because tranny fluid expands when it gets hot which is why you have to check it when its hot. as long as the level is not past the full mark when the trannys completely warm up then the level is fine. if its not then start off by adding more fluid with the engine running, but just add a half a quart and then check the level, then just keep going from there on. but do not let it go past the full mark when its completely hot if so then you have to siphon some fluid out from the dipstick hole

this depends on the type of transmission you have.....6 quarts was NOT enough for mine. I have a 02 Jeep GCL 4.7(with towing package) (deep pan) I ended up having to put in 9 quarts and now its full to were it should be....

and make sure you dont forget the torgue wrench tfor the pan bolts and som RVT gasket maker....High temp(red) may be the best way to go....After all was said and done, it cost around $140 with filter kit and fluid
