It seems to me as if it sticks with you if you played long enough. I played from age 7-35, and started back at 45, after ten years without playing. At first, it has been awkward, but it seems to be coming back.

I would suggest, at least, a year of lessons to begin with because you can't really teach yourself the embouchure.
