Béla Bartók was born in 1881 in a town then in Hungary called Nagyszentmiklós (Great Saint Nicholas). Since the treaty of Trianon at the close of World War 1 the town has been part of Romania and is now called Sânnicolau Mare (which also means 'Great Saint Nicholas').
