Excellent question! Up until the release of their album American Idiot, Green Day avoided the topic of politics. It was at this point that the band revealed their strong liberal stance on many issues.
The title track of American Idiot was written about George W. Bush and Billie Joe Armstrong's feelings toward him. Their song Holiday, as Armstrong described it is "not anti-American. It's anti-war!". The song Wake Me Up When September Ends is partially about the untimely death of Armstrong's father, but also about the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. Ironically, this song was the 11th track on their 9th album.
Their next album, 21st Century Breakdown, also includes topics relating to current events. The song East Jesus Nowhere, for example, was a strongly-worded Ballad, describing the band's thoughts on religion.
