Cultured music, also "serious music", as opposed to "popular music", refers to those kinds of music which are developed, complex and advanced to such an extent that a considerable amount of training in Music Theory is deemed necessary not only to play it but often also to correctly appreciate it. Cultured music also relies on written musical notation. The term is usually synonymous with Classical Music, although contemporary experimental "art music" is often also included. Some people believe that jazz is complex enough to fit the description while others disagree. The term "cultured music" as opposed to "popular music" remains therefore obscure, especially because the borders between popular and classical or "art" music are not always clear-cut.
